Magdelena came to United States at 18 to Gridley, IL. in 1871. She had her birthday on the trip. She came with her brother Philip Ehling, a Joe Martin, a Petter Claudon and Andy Rupp. They landed in Chenoa. Magdalena came to the home of her aunt, Catherine Coppersmith Springer of Gridley.

Magdelena was raised Catholic, but went to the Lutheran service with Matthew who had been confirmed at 14.

When the Mennonite church was founded near theri home, they attend there.
