"Madison, born in Greenbriar County, Va. in 1797, (The year his grandfather Roger died). At the age of nine moved to Scioto County, Ohio with his father. He settled on a 160 acre tract of land in Madison Township, where he was a school teacher and a farmer. His family records were in the possession of his daughter Martha, and it is thought that she destroyed them. Those who knew Madison described him as an aristocrat with a stovepipe hat and carrying a cane.
