CAPT. LUKE5 DEWING (Hezekiah,4 Edmund,3 Andrew,2 Andrew1), born May 9, 1774, in Woodstock, Ct.; died June 16, 1861, in Sheldon, Vt.; believed to have married (1), Lydia Bradway, born Feb. 17, 1773, perhaps in Woodstock; died Feb. 20, 1843, in Sheldon; married (2), Mrs. Anna Evans, born Aug. 4, 1796, who survived him. His son "Dolphus" administered his estate. He probably removed from Woodstock after the birth of his first child, who is recorded in the Family Bible, and remained a short time at or near Hartford, Ct., where his second child was born; he was in Sheldon probably as early as 1795 or '96, where he purchased of Samuel B. Sheldon 64 1/2 acres of land for $100; deed dated Apr. 12, 1808 (Sheldon Land recs., vol. i: p. 317), and another piece of 20 acres, for $80; deed dated Oct. 26, 1808. (Ibid. vol. ii: p. 185.) The town clerk writes: "I find on the land records a continuous list of conveyances from about 1808 to 1861. His name appears frequently as buyer or seller from 1820 to 1855, in which year I find the following (in vol. viii): Luke and Anna Dewing (his wife) to Samantha Mitchell (a daughter); consideration $6,000; deed dated Nov. 12, 1855. From the same records it appears he was collector of taxes of the town 1814 to 1820." The town clerk adds: "He was a prominent man in the early days of the town. A large farm in the town is known as the Dewing farm at the present time (1898). None of the family now reside here." He was a blacksmith and farmer.
