The family story is that Ludvig had fallen in love with the daughter of a local priest in Norway, but because he was only a farmer's son who was not in line to inherit the farm because it went to the oldest son the priest didn't think him good enough to marry his daughter. So, in 1892, Ludvig went to Chicago with his brother Olaf, following his brothers Pete and Carl, to make his fortune. He went back to Norway about Christmas 1899 and married the priest's daughter, Fanny, in 1900.

Han dro til Amerika i 1893 og drev der som forretningsmann, men kom tilbake igjen i 1900.

Giftet seg og bodde på Solberg i Ramnes, Langås i Våle og Berg i Ramnes og sine siste år hos sønnen Fredrik Backe på Flår.
