[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #5636, Date of Import: Jan 3, 2000] Lucy Tappan Nicolas b. 1905. Born in Chicago, she graduated from High School in Indianapolis. She attended State Teachers College in Westchester, PA and taught in Norristown, PA for four years. She earned her Masters Degree from the State Teachers College in Brockport N.Y. and taught 1st grade there for 39 years. Lucy was the first to accept student teachers from State College in the Public School System. In 1935 she started the first Kindergarten in the Public School System, in connection with 1st grade. Her understanding with the Board of Education was that if the class was successful, they would put in a full time teacher the following year. When Lucy retired in 1970 there were 17 classes, so, she says, "It must have been successful". She retired to a retirement home in Dunedin, FL where she lived until her death. She was unmarried. Her remains were spread over the Gulf of Mexico. |
