Lucy was born in the wilds of the Valley of Virginia, where Indians were still quite numerous in that part of the state, for it was still wild and rugged as it was when her ancestors settled there nearly a hundred years before, at which time, a man's gun was an integral part of his daily life. The gun was necessary for the procuring of food daily, and for protection from lurking Indians.

Either before or after the death of her mother, Lucy lived in Woodstock which is in Shenandoah County near the West Virginia line, more than 200 miles from Danville which is in Pittsylvania Co., where she once lived.
