1870 US Census (NC, Granville, Oak Hill Twp, p 257, ln 20) Lucy Ragland 19, black, b. NC, could not read or write. Her son William 1, mu, b. NC, and another son, named “infant,” 1 mo (b. July), also b. NC. There were all living with Mathera (?) Ragland 20, female, black, b. NC and her son John 1, black, b. NC. Both Lucy and Mathera worked on farm. Also living with them, Patty Ragland 24, black, and her daughter Luvenia 1 mo (b. July), black. Not sure if this is the correct Lucy Ragland, but the names and ages of her sons is very close. But where are all the men? - 9/16/05 1876 Per Ancestry.com, Mecklenburg County Virginia Birth Records, 1866-1885, Clark Ragland was born to Gilbert and Lucy Ragland in 1876. Listed as colored, male, from page 264. I need to refer to the original source (compiled by Beth Fridley, Provo, UT) for additional info. This is a new name with which I was previously unfamiliar. 1880 US Census, (NC, Granville, Walnut Grove Twp, ED 103, sh 38, ln 29), she was living with her children as a boarder with Harris Oxford. No mention of George Sr., or Jr...... Not entirely sure this is the same person, but very probably is correct Lucy Ragland. Oxford Harris, 66, black, b. NC, both parents b. NC, farmer, William Ragland 11, black, servant, b. NC, both parents b. NC; Lucy Ragland 30, black, boarder, works on farm, b. NC, both parents b. NC; The rest of the Ragland children were b. NC, both parents b. NC, all listed as boarders: James 9, Ida 7, Carrie 6, John 3, and Maggie 1.
