Grandma Calhoun as she was known among her friends and relatives, was born somewhere in Wyoming about 90 years ago. Her early childhood was spent with her parents and an only brother on the Platte river near where Casper now stands. Her father was Louis GUINARD, a French Canadian and her mother was a full blood Shoshone Indian woman. There on the Platte in the early 1850's, Louis GUINARD built and operated a toll bridge. He also owned a small store and blacksmith shop. It was on this bridge during flood water that he met his death. A short time later, his only son was killed by the Sioux Indians while out after his oxen team. The Indians also burned up the store and shop after GUINARD's death. The mother soon married again and moved with her husband and Lucille to Sweetwater County and near Independence Rock established and operated a ferry boat on the old Oregon Trail. After a few years, the GUINARDs moved to Fort Bridger. It was here, Lucille met and married James CALHOUN. To this union, 11 children were born. Six of whom preceded the father and mother in death. Johnny, William and Lilly died at Big Piney and were buried there. Lucille grew to womanhood on the Meadow Creek and is bured there. James, Grover and Humphrey perished in a snow storm in 1900 and their bodies were found about five miles from home by cowboys. The boys had run away from the Government School at Fort Washakie and were nearly home. James CALHOUN died at his Meadow Creek Ranch, February 23, 1920. The living children are Anna MAY MOTZ, Mamie CHANDLER, Emma DeSHAW, Joseph CALHOUN and Isabelle MEEKS. Sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren survive. Services were read at the house and at the family cemetery by Rev. L. D. Steuland of Wind River. Burial arrangements were in charge of Benson Coolidge Co., of Lander.
