According to the 1920 Census, Lucija was born in 1886 and immigrated in 1913, she could not read or write Lithuanian and spoke no English. Her death certificate, filled out by her second husband, Steve, gave her birth year as 1882 and year of immigration as 1808. Lucija/Lucy endured many tragedies in her life. Her first child, Kazimierus, died in 1915 at one year of age, and her 4th son, Jonas, died in 1919 at 4 months of age. Her husband, Motiejus/Mike died in 1929 of Black Lung Disease. According to the probate record, Peter and Walter were placed in an orphanage after their father's death and remained there 18-24 months. In 1934 the family home was sold for $300.00. $45.50 was paid to the orphanage and Lucija received $45.50 as guardian of Mike and Frank. Lucija married Stanislov/Steve Astrausky between 1931-1934.(Burned Court House) Her son, Frank was killed in 1934 at age 18 from a dynamite explosion at a CCC Camp in Cape Girardeau, MO. Lucija died of alcoholism in 1935; her husband was appointed guardian to Mike, Peter and Walter until they finished high school. He received $6.00 a month for their expenses.
Obituary for Lucille Laitas Austrausky (1882-1935) "Ill four days, Mrs. Lucille Laitas Austrausky, 52, 217 Jefferson Street, died at her home at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday with complications. Mrs. Astrausky was born in Lithuania Mar. 28, 1882, coming to Westville 27 years ago. Surviving are the husband, Steve; three sons, Michael, Peter and Walter,all at home. A son, Frank, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at Holy Cross Church at 9 A.M. Friday, the Rev. Z.K. Vipartas officiating. Burial in Lithuanian National Cemetery, Urbas & Son in charge." References
