Together with his older brothers Lourens Petrus and Johannes Gerhardus he, after the battle of Vegkop in 1836, rushed to the assistance of the van Rensburg family who was surrounded by Zulu fighters. Upon return to the lager Sarel Cilliers requested Lucas Rudolph to assist in the burial of the trekkers murdered at Blaauwkrans. He said later that what he saw there was so bad that one could easily have passed away from the terrible sight.

Lucas later moved to Modderriver in the Free State. In 1851 he moved to 'de Poortje' at Gatsrand near the current Potchefstroom. On 24 December 1858 he received the title deed for the farm 2758 morge in size.
