BIOGRAPHY: The Haverhill Emersons Compiled by Charles Henry Pope Boston, Mass. Murray and Emery Company 1913 - Page 162 Part II He went to Cincinatti, O., in 1856. Was in Kansas in 1857, 1858 and 1859 during the struggle between freedom and slavery. Returning East, he was in New Jersey when the War of the Rebellion broke out; while at Trenton on business, he met the governor and was asked to help in organizing; acted as Post Adjutant and went out to the front as Quartermaster of the 15th Volunteer Infantry of the State. Served under General Sheridan. Was A. A. D. C. of 1st Brigade, 1st Division in the 6th Army Corps at Gettysburg and afterward. When he first went to Cincinnati he identified himself with the Congregational church; was chosen deacon; later, making his home at the suburb of College Hill, he joined the Presbyterian church and was made an elder. He was long a trustee of Lane Theological Seminary. His business was that of carriage making; he was the first manufacturer to introduce the duplication of parts. He was president of the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce for a number of years; was a Free Mason and identified with several clubs. He had a very clear mind and a remarkable memory. He was successful in life by reason of great diligence and concentration and fidelity. In his later years he spent part of the year at Clearwater, Fla. |
