William Buchanan Smith married, 12jun1866 at Singapore, Louisa BAUMGARTEN, 4th daughter of Christian Baumgarten, Registrar of H. M. Court of Judicature, Singapore (Glasgow Herald). William Buchanan Smith (1837, son of John Fairfull S., asst to Middleton Harrison and Co.) marr Louisa Baumgarten (1849, dau of Christian) 1866 at Singapore (findmypast). Louisa Mary Baumgarten (2nov1848 Singapore-1923 Ilfracombe, Devon) was daughter of Christian Baumgarten (of Dutch origin) and Caroline (information, M. Jones). Christian Baumgarten became Registrar of Supreme Court of Singapore 1857, (Straits Times, 1930), resigned 1874 and d. 1887; Christian was succeeded by C.E. Velge ("100 years of Singapore").

According to the obituary of William, he was in Singapore abt 1862-abt 1907, was survived by 2 sons and 8 daughters; he was one of the best known men in Malaya and earlier reputed to be the richest European there (Straits Times).

In 1911 William Buchanan Smith (1837 Edinburgh, retd accountant), wife Louisa (1849 Singapore, marr since 1867, 14 children, 10 alive), and children (b. Singapore), Annie Fairfull (1868), Emily (1871), Alice Charlotte (1874), Margaret Eleanor (1876), Hilda Mary (1887) and Winifred Turner (1893) were at Torrs Cottage, Torrs Park, Ilfracombe (census); Torrs Cottage is now Hotel Epchris (M. Jones).
