Named for a charismatic Methodist minister who would often attract upwards of 10,000 people for his outdoor travelling ministry. His views were so extreme that the Methodist church would not ordain him.

Living in Columbia, ME at 1850 United States Census. Also listed in Bucksport at the 1850 census. In Belfast, ME at 1860 Census with personal estate valued at $200. In Rockland, ME at 1870 census with real estate valued at $1000. Listed in Rockland Directory of 1875 as Presiding Elder of Methodist Church. Home on Grace Street. Living with son in Pembina, North Dakota in 1900

"A campmeeting was held last week at East Machias under the direction of Rev. L.D. Wardwell, Presiding Elder of the Bucksport District." -Bangor Whig & Courier 04 September 1882

"Our Orrington correspondent writes: Interesting quarterly meeting services were held at the M.E. Church last Sabbath. In the morning two persons were baptised and received into the church. In the afternoon, the Rev. L.D. Wardwell preached an excellent sermon at the Snow school house, and another in the evening at the church." -Bangor Whig & Courier 05 January 1883
