Lois Rose (Main) Smith, age 94, she was a longtime resident of Hammond, IN and more recently of Otterbein Home in Ohio. Lois was born in East Chicago, IN on April 9, 1918 to Neil Carlos and Bessie Leota (Crumrine) Main. She graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1935 and from Indiana State Teachers College in 1939. She taught school 12 years at James Whitcomb Riley Elementary School in Hammond, IN in 1960's and 1970's. She was a longtime member of Southside Christian Church, was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, and volunteered for many church activities. Lois enjoyed sewing, reading, and playing the piano. In later years she moved to Ohio to be near her children. Lois married Nathan Douglas Smith in St. Charles, LA on August 5, 1942 and he preceded her in death in 1976. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Barbara. Lois is survived by 4 children Carl Smith and wife Shirley, Sandra Stoddard and husband Jeff, Larry Smith, and Barbara Bechtel and husband Stephen; 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters Louise Anderson, Glenn Main, Kathleen Sweeney, and Carl Main. A memorial service will be held 2pm Friday January 4, 2013 at CrossView Christian Church 4237 Social Row Rd Waynesville, OH with Randy Snyder officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following services. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Otterbein at Clearcreek and Acclaim Hospice for their attentive care.
