Licking Cemetery Improvements Posted by: lmwalls (IP Logged) Date: June 13, 2006 12:25PM LICKING CEMETERY IMPROVEMENTS AND LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS (source and date unknown but had to be after March 1922 which was the death date of S. D. Burns, listed below.) In justice to the people who so generously contributed to the improvements of the Licking cemetery last fall, we wish to say that the members of that association are thankful for the same and are proud of the work that has been done. The entire plot is green from one end to the other and a large circular flower bed provided by Mr. and Mrs. F. C. McEwen ornaments the center of the cemetery. To start with the proposition of F. C. McEwen of Sligo and W. C. McEwen of New Bethlehem was accepted, that they would contribute $500 if the association raise a like amount, making $1000.00 for which the entire cemetery was to be improved as follows: All old sod, weeds and briers to be removed. Then the tombstones were to be straightened up and the sunken graves filled up and the high places removed and leveled off. Then the entire surface was to be dug over six inches deep and fertilized with both lime and phosphate and to be thoroughly pulverized and raked over smooth and sowed in grass seed. This has all been done; also a walk made the entire length of the cemetery and a drive-way of stone covered with ashes made across the short way of the cemetery. The following is a list of the parties who so generously donated the following amounts. Addresses of those who no longer reside in the community are given. Those marked with a star have died since the work commenced last autumn and their remains now lie in the cemetery: F. C. McEwen, Sligo $250.00 W. C. McEwen, N.
