Lillian was born at Barrington Place, Gateshead. Her mother Ellen was a grocery and provision dealer. (1871 Census) She was the youngest of six siblings. Her brother William George was a blacksmith, her sisters were machine seamstresses. (1881 Census)

(S3)J.W. Mcalster won the Saddle Leaping contest on 28th Dec 1886 and had also won the Wheeleries contest in 1881. Lilian was an accomplished horsewoman, jumping sidesaddle over six foot high fences.
