During his time in the navy, John Rutherford acquired a tattoo of an anchor and cross on his left forarm and a tatoo of a Japanese woman's head and flowers, with a heart below on right forearm.

On returning to land he served as a Fire Officer at Ashington Fire Station.

12 May 1924 Joined Royal Naval Reserve.
