Note received from Dede Darsey Holden: "In early May 1861 he walked from his home, The Old Log Cabin School House Complex in Old Bogaloosa to Livingston and enlisted in the Famous Alabama Fifth Infantry Regiment, Colonel and later General Robert Rhodes, Commanding. After a short training session in Montgomery, his unit went by train to Northern Virginia and became an integral part of General Stonewall Jackson's 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, Robert Lee, Commanding General. He first saw action at Manassas and fought all battles until his capture on July 1, 1862 at the battle of Gettysburg. He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until he was exchanged in Richmond. "After Lee's surrender at Appomattox, wounded, sick and disheartened he walked back home to Bogaloosa. He married Elizabeth (Bet) Bonner on November 14, 1865."
