There is no proof of Lewis' birthplace. Cordelia stated her father was born in Virginia for most census records, but in 1910 she stated he was born in France. If he was born in France his name is more likely something like "Louis de Gressett." Lewis is on the 1826 personal tax records for Gloucester County, Virginia, so he is probably related to the Gressett families still living there in the mid 1800's. He probably moved to King and Queen County around 1833 because he is on land tax records there from 1833 to 1840. He was an overseer for P. T. Pollard's plantation in Greenwood. His estate was on land tax records from 1841 to 1847.
