Lewis Clark did serve in the Civil War in Company L. of the 12th Indiana Calvary. His name is inscribed on a Civil War monument in Angola, Indiana. One of his descendants told Mrs. Albert Eugene Clark in an interview that Lewis actually joined the War three times, once for himself, and then for two other people, for money. (This maybe be why we find he left the area and went out to Iowa by the 1870 census)
