"Cashtown Man Ends Life By Shooting," 16 Mar 1933, p. 5, col. 1; digital images : accessed 23 May 2010)., 23 May 2010.
Cashtown Man Ends Life by Shooting The victim of self-inflicted bullets, fired into his head some time between midnight and 4 o'clock, Wednseday morning, the body of Charles B. Carbaugh, 59, Cashtown barber and part owner of the Cashtown nurseries, was found in a bedroom of his home at 8 o'clock, Wednesday evening. Dr. Edgar A. Miller, Adams County coroner, who was present when neighbours broke into the Carbaugh home, rendered a verdict of suicide. Carbaugh, a school teacher many years ago and later tax collector of Franklin township, fired two shots from a 33-calibre rifle into his head, one under the chin and the other in the middle of his forehead. The first bullet, which entered under the chin, came out through Carbaugh's left eye, and was not fatal, but the second shot tore off the top of his head. Both shots were fired while Carbaugh was in the bedroom. After firing the first shot, Carbaugh walked to the bathroom, as indicated by a trail of blood between the two rooms. The second pellet brought instant death, and Carbaugh fell, with part of his body reclining against the bed and the other part on the floor. From information given by Harry Deardorff, who lives across the street from the Carbaugh home, Dr. Miller fixed the time of the suicide at between midnight and 4 o'clock, Wednesday morning. When Deardorff went to bed at midnight, Tuesday, he saw no light in the Carbaugh home, but on awakening at 4 o'clock, Wednesday morning, he noticed a light in the bedroom occupied by Carbaugh. When Carbaugh failed to appear at his barber shop, Wednesday, and when neighbors noticed the light still burning in Carbaugh's bedroom, Wednesday evening, Wilbur Geyer, Cashtown, climbed a tree in front of the Carbaugh home and caught a glimpse of a rifle lying in the room. Another neighbor, who climbed the tree, reported seeing a blood-smeared hand. Dr. Miller was summoned, and when he arrived an effort was made to enter the Carbaugh home. All doors and windows were found locked, and Dr. Miller gave permission for Harry Deardorff to break in an inside cellar door. A search revealed Carbaugh's body, with the shoes and coat removed, in the bedroom. A two-page letter, addressed to Carbaugh's only son, Carroll Carbaugh, who is employed by Minter Brothers, Philadelphia confectioners, was found on the dresser, and turned over to the coroner. According to Doctor Miller, Carbaugh assigned financial difficulties for his act, in the letter. Carbaugh lived alone since the death of his wife last August. He was a barber in Cashtown for more than 20 years. Several years ago, he and E. W. Hartman purchased the farm of the late George W. Schwartz, of Cashtown, and launched the Cashtown nurseries. He was born in Franklin township, a son of the late Lewis and Sarah (Brough) Carbaugh. He was a member of Trinity Reformed church, near Cashtown. Surviving are one son, Carroll Carbaugh, Philadelphia, and one brother, Edward Carbaugh, Highland township. Private funeral was held from the home of S. L. Allison, Fairfield undertaker, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev. G. Howard Koons officiating. Interment at Arendtsville.
