Information on Lewis Burwell

Lewis Burwell was a Naval Officer of the Upper District of James River and he conducted his business from his landing Burwell's Ferry. Burwell was Justice of the Peace in 1752 for James City County. Lewis' debts were considerable and in 1775, the Burwells moved out of "Kingsmill" and settled at "The Oaks", a large tract of land located at Butcher's Creek and on the Roanoke River in Mecklenburg County, VA.
