Facts and Events
According to Lewis's naturalization papers, he was born in Volyn′, Russia on July 2, 1880. Other documentation, including ships’ manifests from the 1930’s have more specific information and indicate that his place of birth was Starokonstantinov [1], which, in 1880 was a town in Volyn′, Russia. Starokonstantinov is now located in modern day Ukraine. Lewis’s naturalization papers also state that he and his family arrived in London in 1888. It’s unknown, at this time, when the family actually left Russia or the exact route that they took to get to England. Without a doubt, the family left Russia, along with millions of other Jews, during a mass emigration in the late 1880's and early 1990's. After a wave of anti-Jewish riots in the early 1880’s, known as the pogroms [2], spread through the area which is now modern day Poland and Ukraine, lingering anti-Semitism and discriminatory policies made it intolerable for many Jews to remain in the area. The first evidence of the family in England shows up on the 1901 British Census [[3]]. However, the surname on the census is incorrect and is stated as 'Bromlick'. At this time, no evidence of the family in England has been found prior to the 1901 census. The 1891 census does not appear to have an entry, even though Lewis stated the family had been in England since 1888.
