The oldest son of John and Catherine Byers, who immigrated from Bavaria, Levi was born in Adams County, PA where the family settled. On August 15, 1871, he married Josephine Snouffer and settled in New Oxford to raise their family. Josephine was the daughter of Joseph David and Mary E. (Unknown) Snouffer of Emmitsburg, MD. Levi and Josephine had 10 children, but only six lived to adults: Mary Mamie (Lookenbill), Charles Henry, Bessie C. (Withers), twins Francis B and Levi Lawrence, and Philip M.
Obituary read:
Levi Byers died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Withers, Oxford Township, near Irishtown, with whom he resided, yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. He was aged 77 years, ten months and 25 days. Death was due to a complication of disensea. The parents of the deceased were the late John and Catherine Byers. His wife preceded him in death. Surviving are one daughter and four sons as follows: Charles Byers, Bittengers; Mrs. W.A. Withers, Oxford township, near Irishtown; Frank and Lawrence Byers, New Oxford; and Philip Byers, Middletown, Pa.; a brother, Alexander Byers, New Oxford; and 20 grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock when services will be conducted at the house. The Rev. George E. Sheffer, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, New Oxford Cemetery.
