Obituary Wells Mabel
Mrs. Orlan Wells
Mrs. Orlan Wells died at her home near Russell, Iowa, on Thursday morning, April 29, 1937, at the age of 45 years, 3 months and 14 days, after an illness of ab ten days with pleurisy and pneumonia. In spite of all that medical skill and loving hands could do she sliped into the Great Beyond.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, were held at the Belinda Christian church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
Mabel Jewell Byers, only daughter of Nathan and Martha Jane Byers, was born in Belinda, Iowa, on January 15, 1892. There, in her quiet country home, she passed the years of innocent childhood, and from this home she attended the little country school, where she was loved and respected by her teachers and schoolmates.
In her home and school she drank deeply from the fountain of nature until her life seemed permeated with the fragrance of the rose and the purity of the lly and the joy of the the song birds, and these were the characteristics which won her friends, numbered by her acquaintances.
She attended the Chariton high school, graduating with the class of 1913.
On April 5, 1913, she was married to Orlan S. Wells. For several years they lived on a farm near her old home but later moved to the community near Russell.
Seven children came to bless and brighten this home. They are Addison, Dean, Vernon, Thayne, Betty, Donald, and Patricia.
To her home and her chidlren she gave all the love, skill and ingenuity which was hers. The effects of this mother love and devotion will ever be a guiding and sustaining light in the lives of her children.
On September 16, 1907, she united with the Belinda Christian church, at an early age, andwas never tiring in her devotion to its interests.
Besides her grief stricken husband and children she is survived by her father and mother and two brothers, Clyde L. Byers, of Purdy, and Lester Byers, of Los Angeles, California. Several other relatives are also left to mourn the loss of this wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. To them her noble life must ever be a loving memory and to all who have known her an incentive to a higher and nobler plane of living.
Her old schoolmates paid her the following tribute:
"Dear Mabel, you have gone and left us. We shall miss you so, but we shall keep in loving remembrance all those happy, golden hours we have spent together on the old Belinda school grounds. Our lives have been made richer and better because you have lived among us. The Great Master Teacher rang the bell and you have gone to take your seat. We may be a little late but we will come just as soon as we hear the bell."
Among the number from a distance in attendance at the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. John Borger and daughter, Dorothy Byers, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wells, Miss Chloe Buzzard, Des Moines, Verne Spiker, Hedrick; Dr. and Mrs. I. S. Buzzard, Jefferson, Iowa.
