___________ I am trying to solve a problem about a missing Leonard Davis. Has anyone ever found evidence that the Leonard Davis above (B 1731 Orange Co, VA who m. Susannah Burris had a son, Leonard Jr. ? PROBLEM: EMILY DAVIS (1816-1880) married JOEL HILL (1812-1884) of Surry County, NC 03 Feb 1836. • Marriage bond signed by Leonard Davis and Joel Hill. • No indication of actual relationship between Leonard Davis and Emily Davis on the document. • Leonard was presumably father, grandfather, brother or uncle. If father, Leonard would have been born ca 1790-1800. If grandfather, Leonard would have been born ca 1780 or earlier. Emily Davis has been difficult to identify and link with parents. • Early federal censuses don’t list family members, so she doesn't appear in any Federal census until 1850 as wife of Joel Hill, so this has not been useful to identify her parents. • Readily available references are limited to the marriage bond (actual document, marriage indexes). OBESERVATIONS The available censuses may indirectly lead to a conclusion: Surry County: • Leonard Davis; appears in NC state census in 1786, Federal census in 1800, 1810. • No Leonard Davis appears after 1810 Federal census in Surry County, NC. Overton County, TN: • Leonard Davis appears in Federal Census 1820, 1830, 1850, 1860, 1880. • Leonard Davis, described as Jun’r appears only once in Federal Census 1840. But appears in 1850, 1860 and 1880 as Leonard Davis. Mentions wife Elizabeth in 1850 and 1860. • Leonard Davis not listed in the Federal Census in 1870. • Leonard Davis reappears in the Federal Census in 1880. Listed as a widower in 1880. CONCLUSIONS: • There are two Leonard Davises, father and son. • They moved from Surry County, NC to Overton County, TN at different times. • Evidence for two Leonard Davises: • Discontinuous age: 1830 Leonard is age 70-80. 1840 Leonard is age 40 to 50; described as "Leonard Davis Jun’r". - No suffix appended to his name after 1840, but the consistency of age with the dates of the census strongly suggests it is the same person • Evidence for migration from North Carolina: • In 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses each record that Leonard Davis, Jr. was born in NC. • Who’s who: • Leonard Davis, Sr. (1750-1830) Born in Orange County, VA is the 1786, 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830 Leonard Davis. - Relocated from Surry County, NC to Overton County, TN between 1810 and 1820. - Died between 1830 and 1840. • Leonard Davis, Jr. (1793- aft 1880) is the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1880 Leonard Davis. - Guarantor of the marriage bond - Father of Emily Davis. - Relocated from Surry County, NC to Overton County, TN between 1830 and 1840 presumably to join his family who had previously moved there. - Emily Davis was his daughter and married Joel Hill in 1836 - Emily Davis Hill remained in Surry County, NC with her husband. - Husband of Elizabeth in 1850 and 1860 in Overton County - Widower of 1880. - Died after 1880.
