Lena was actually adopted by her uncle, John Thomas Garrett and her aunt, Pearl Rule. She did not know she was adopted until she was told by classmates in elementary school. Her mother passed away from consumption when she was around 9 months old . Lena married Paul Blackmer at the age of around 19 and remained married to him until he passed away at around age 73. They raised two children, Eugene Blackmer and Joyce Blackmer. She and Paul lived mainly in southern California throughout their married life, except for a brief time in Redwood City, California where Paul owned a lumber mill. Lena and Paul were know for their beautiful gardens . Lena moved to Brookings, Oregon to be closer to her daughter Joyce and her husband Jim after Paul died. She also had two granddaughters, Teri Milner Larsson and Jeri Milner Spittler. She passed away after a bout with pneumonia at Seasid Hospital in Crescent City, California.
