After discharge from the military, he worked in a parking lot, and then in a garment factory, before his career with the Missouri highway department. He loved working outdoors and spending time outside.

They had a farm next to Betty's parents in Pleasant Hope, Missouri. It was 59 acres and they raised cattle. Leland also loved to go raccoon hunting, though he wasn't able to participate much after his leg was damaged.

Leland had 5 sisters and his mom's name was Roxy. He was about 5' 7".

  2. He developed bronchitis and during his treatment, a vein in his leg was damaged, causing a permanent painful disability. He was released from the service immediately following.
