After Leander left the Confederate Army, he joined with his brothers, Miles and Murray in the Union Army. He said he was given leave to visit home, but he did not return to the Union Army. He said he had cut his foot and could not get his shoe on.
In 1891, Leander applied for a pension, but the application was denied, as he did not have an honorable discharge.
