Murdered In Line Of Duty By F. Boyd. Another account of Leander Cooks death, is that he died from wounds received in a shoot out with another law officer Sam Mays. My Aunt Joyce (Hager) Mahone has told me the story of how Leander Cook was killed and she said that he went to a house to arrest a man and he ran out the back door and hid in his barn. When Leander approached the barn he started shooting. He returned fire and both were shot. Leander although injured went to a near by creek and scooped up some water in his hat and went to the mortally wounded man and gave him a drink of water. Leander later died from his wounds.
