Lawrence, or Larry, Van Dusen was forty-two when he made his historic trip through the Great Lakes to scout for a new location for his family. His home was Girard, Pennsylvania. Girard is a bit southwest of Erie. Apparently he went to the home of his parents in Byron, Genesee County, New York, before he went to Buffalo to get the boat to “Milwalky.” In 1846 he moved the family in an ox-drawn covered wagon to Columbia County, Wisconsin (close to Fort Winnebago). His brother Sylenus moved his family into Michigan about the same time.
