!Bill ran a service station on Central Boulevard in Charlotte and also a grocery store in the same location. During the war, he was kept pretty busy because of the coupons everyone had to use. It was hard to keep help, so Ruth helped him out a lot. Bill also served in World War I. Bill had to retire early due to heart trouble and after spending three summers at Carolina Beach, he moved his family there in 1949. He loved fishing and was handy around the house. His daughter, Shirley, related that there were six boys ahead of Bill. When he was little, "his mother said she needed some help in the KITCHEN, not in the field, so she took him in to help her and he learned to cook. He was a good cook." There were 11 children, and one died in infancy. The first night that Bill was staying at a rooming house (Ruth's Aunt Hattie), everyone asked him his name, and jokingly he replied, "Oh, just call me Bill!" The name stuck and he was known by that for the rest of his life! |
