Information from Valuation rolls in local history library Blackburn, West Lothian - Rented shop at 22 Main St Bathgate as well as stables at rear of premises from John Marr between 1915 and 1919 for use as a fruit and veg shop. Lawrence Culley's occupation was given as a miner. Annual rent each year from 1914/15 to 1919/20 was £6/10/- (£6.50) and feu duty was 9d (less than 4p) The shop was probably run by his wife and daughter Mary until Mary died in 1918 followed by wife Catherine in 1919 although his eldest daughter Catherine may have been involved as well. Catherine was a farriers assistant before marriage and is known to have used the horse and cart, possibly for deliveries.

Lawrence returned to Glasgow years after his wifes death. He regularly changed address and seems to have stayed with different family members. 55 Cornwall St was also his youngest sister Betsy's usual address on her death cert. Neice Catherine McRoberts also gives the same address when registering her mother Betsy's death
