Source note from Norman Jackson: 1908 is the correct year of birth based on the local weekly newspaper "Otsego Farmer" dated April 24, 1908 that makes note and I quote "A son was born to Mr & Mrs Carey Jackson on Sunday". His military records show that on 2 May 1924 he joined the 10th Inf, New York Army National Guard at Mohawk, New York. He was just 16 years old. He was honorably discharged on Jan 5, 1925 to enlist in the Regular U.S. Army. On 5 January 1925, still 16 years old, he enlisted as a Private for a three year term in the Regular U.S. Army. In 1927 he received the Secretary of the Treasury Silver Life Saving Medal from Army Chief of Staff Major General Charles Pelot Summerall at Governor's Island, New York while serving as a Private First Class and a Bugler with Company C. 16th Inf, U.S. Army. He was presented this medal for saving the life of a fellow soldier who had fallen overboard into the Hudson River near Haverstraw, New York during maneuvers in 1926. He was 18 years old at that time. He was Honorably Discharged in January 1928 as a Corporal. Sources: Honorable Discharge, U.S. Army National Guard dated 5 January 1925. On 22 August 1928 LaVerne enlisted for two (2) years in the U.S. Coast Guard and was Honorably Discharged on 23 September 1930 as a Seaman 1st Class at Coast Guard Base 2, Staten Island, New York. On 16 October 1930, Laverne was allowed to re-enlist for One (1) year at Coast Guard Recruiting Station, New York, N.Y. under "Special Temporary Enlistment" requirements. He was Honorably Discharged on 15 October 1931 as a Seaman 1st Class at Coast Guard Base 2, Staten Island, New York. S: U.S. Coast Guard Discharge # A1544 dtd 15 October 1931. On 24 March 1943 "Jack" enlisted for military service at Syracuse, New York. He was sent to Army Engineering School at Ft Belvoir, Va. and was then assigned to the 1075th Ship Repair Company at Oakland, Ca. attaining the rank of Sgt.
