Sgt. Kit "Keith" Allen, born 1840 Pinckney Island, SC, died December 1866, Stoney's Plantation, Hilton Head, SC, Served in Company C, 21st Colored Regiment.
Enlisted May 11, 1863 at Hilton Head, SC as a Corporal. Promoted to Sgt. on Dec. 6, 1863. Reduced in rank on July 25, 1865 for absence from camp without leave. Reappointed Sgt. Sept 1, 1865. Mustered out at Charleston, SC on April 25, 1866. Married to Pattie Grant in Dec. 1862 on Squire Pope's Plantation on Hilton Head Island, SC. Pattie and Kit lived at Seabrook until Kit enlisted. Pattie applied for a widow's pension on Nov. 18, 1887. They had two daughters, Louisa born in 1864; died 1886. Alice born 1869.
Pattie was born a slave of Henry Pinckney. Her father's name was Charles Grant. After Kit died, Pattie lived with her mother on Pope's place on Hilton Head Island. Later she moved to Charleston. Abram Jones appeared as a witness in the case of Pattie Allen. He states that he was a brother to Kit Allen and that their father's name was Kit Jones and their mother's name was Sophia. Kit Allen took the surname Allen when he entered the army. They all belonged to Mrs. Pinckney on Pinckney's Island. There was also a daughter, Rebecca who married a Mitchell. After Abram was mustered out, he worked on Robbers Row on Hilton Head for a German silversmith. In the latter part of 1862 they all left Pinckney Island and went to Hilton Head. Their mother at Stony Place or Fairfield on Hilton Head. She died there in 1862. Abram states that Pattie was never married to Kit Allen and that she had lived with him only one year but other witnesses dispute that. Pension was issued May 18, 1892. Pension dropped Nov. 4, 1901.
