- BEAL, Kenneth Allen
Ken Beal was received by his Lord and Savior and his wife of 63 years on September 4, 2010 after a hard fought battle with Parkinson's disease and heart failure. He was surrounded by his family. He was born on April 16, 1926, and raised in Appleton, MN, where he remembered his
wife, Ione Sallen, in grade school. His father farmed with horses and only bought a tractor after Ken left home for boot camp in Farragut, ID, during WWII. After the War he tried farming for a while and then went to telegraphy school. The next few years he worked for the Great Northern Railroad.
After moving to Spokane, Ken worked for Kaiser. He later sold insurance which eventually led him to sales, service, and management for Singer Company. After he opened his own store, Town and Country Sewing Center, in 1984 with his long-time associate, Ernie Como, he continued to work until he was 72.
Ken regularly gave much of his only day off to church leadership and activities. He and Ione were charter members of Westview Congregational for 50 years. After it closed, Ken became active in the Men's Bible Study at Colbert Presbyterian. He always made time for family and enjoyed the fact that his three children and four grandchildren all stayed in the area. A grandchild's game or recital was seldom missed.
In addition, Ken volunteered tirelessly for SCOPE-SIRT, providing leadership and learning many different facets of the organization. He also served in his local homeowners association, American Legion, and was president of the SK Morse Telegraph Club.
Ken will be missed by his three children. He was very proud of his grandchildren and his two great-grandsons. His brother-in-law, Don (Shirley) Sallen who still resides in Minnesota, and many neighbors and friends will also feel his loss. He was always busy helping people: repairing, snow blowing, cutting firewood, painting, and much more.
His family wishes to thank Caring Bridge website, the Veterans Home, St. Joseph Care Center, and especially Royal Park Care Center for their services and care for the entire family. Services will be held at Colbert Presbyterian Church on September 25, at 1:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to New Hope Resource Center, 4211 E. Colbert Road, Colbert, WA 99005.
