Note written by Katharine Jean Milroy Uhl Covey My Great, Great Grandmother, Lady Mary March, sister of the Earl of March, of England. Eloped with John Steele, a commoner, because her family objected to a person without rank & came to America. She had 7 children by Steele. After his death she married John Torrence, who had fled from Ireland during the revolution of 1798, to save his life. He was a sympathizer of Emmett, the Patriot. John Torrence was a widower with one child, Ellen, who married and went to California. Her Grandson is Patton, of Chicago. Three boys were born to Torrence and Mary March. Armand (?), George & Irwin. George was Colonial (?_maybe Colonel?) in Mexican War and intimate friend of Col. Cody (Buffalo Bill). Irwin, Pres. of Philadelphia Bible House. Irwin was 8 when Mary March died and he lived with his Aunt Fanny Torrence Koerner (my Great Grandmother) until he was 10 & then went to study with Judge Porter in Wilton, PA. Mrs. Porter was Mary Steele & my Great, Great Aunt.
