Facts and Events
The German pronunciation of the name Buechner was reportedly "Boockner". (Source: P. Hartman) Ed Reisland was going to eat at the school cafeteria at Horace Mann Jr. High, but he went home instead. Gramma had passed on. The 1910 census lists that Phillip and Katherine had 4 children, but only 3 were living at the time of the census. Grandma Orth lived with Ella, David, Ed, Arnie and Jane. She stayed in a front room downstairs. Ruth Hasse remembers that while Katherine lived with Ella and David, "she always prepared the boys grapefruit at night so they could eat it early next morning." She was a good cook. The Orth/Reisland house on Webb Road was a farm house built around 1850 that had been moved to the lot at 1372 Webb Road. Gramma Orth owned 2 lots. Carl Hasse had the house moved around 1918 over to the new foundation at 1370, and built his own house on 1372 Webb Road. When Cindy, Sallie, and Ed visited the house in 2001, the current owners were restoring the old house. Ed Reisland remembered: Katie slept sitting up in a rocking chair in the kitchen at 1370 Webb Road the last 15 years of her life. She had "dropsey". Her legs filled with water, and would leak liquid from ulcerated sores. She had bandages that she wore around her legs. This fluid may have caused congestive heart failure if she laid down--that's why she slept sitting up.
