    "Many miles away to the east, in a farmhouse on the outskirts of a town near the Polish border, another father proudly surveyed his first-born son. Carl August Döring was born on the 26 December while the Church-bells rang-in the Second Christmas Day and snowflakes fell softly onto trees and roofs and already white fields. The oxen in the stable were told the happy news as their mangers were filled with hay from the loft--a new farmer had been born!"
