Chief "Old Hop" Kanagatoga ended the British appointed rulership over the Cherokees and became Princeple headman about 1753. He lived in Chota. During the French and Indian wars (1754 - 1763) he kept active relations with the English and their enemies, the French. Oconostota and Kittagusta were his trusted advisors. Old Hop was the chosen leader of the Cherokee through his death in 1761.
