Julius Patterson was born in Guilford County in 1796. After reaching manhood he moved to Stokes County. He was a mechanic by trade and also a farmer, and late in life moved to Surry County, where he spent his last days. He married Rachel Ward, of Guilford County, and both are buried in the old Salem churchyard near Mount Airy." [ History of North Carolina, Vol. VI, Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York,1919. page 202, a biography of John W. Patterson, grandson of Julius] The death certificate for son Wiley E. Patterson states that his father was Julius Patterson born in Orange co. NC and mother was Rachel Ward born in Guilford co. NC. 1814, A Julius and David Patterson can be found in the 1814 Stokes co. Also in the regiment was a Christopher Mathews private (not in pension index). April 4, 1817, Julius A. Patterson married Rachel Ward in Stokes Co. NC. [ancestry.com - North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868, bond #000140783, record #02 233, bondsman Jno. McMurry. Jane Patterson Dierberger's DAR application has April 4, 1817 as their marriage date (no source given). Jno. McMurry was witness on about 11 marriages in the early 1800s. Was he a clerk? He was witness on the marriage of a Joseph Patterson to a Susannah Bowman in 1818.] The 1820 Stokes Co. NC census page 360 has Julius Patterson age 16 to 26 with two males under 5 (John & James) and one female age 16 to 26 (wife Rachel). A James Patterson (over 45) is on the same page with a large family. On the next page are families of several other Pattersons who may or may not be related to Julius. This census is alphabetical. Juda Ward she married Green L. Richardson Feb. 12, 1825 in Stokes co. NC, Julius A. Patterson was bondsman. The 1830 Stokes co. NC Deed Indexes (grantors pg.181 on FHL film 546,210; grantees pg.159 on FHL film 546,214)] Julius's father James had lived in Henry co. VA in the 1770s when he served in the Rev. War (pension application papers). Henry county is just across the state line from Stokes county. The 1840 Henry Co. VA census page 274 has Julius Patterson age 40 to 50 with one male under five, one male age 10 to 15, one male age 20 to 30, two females under five, one female age 10 to 15, one female age 15 to 20, one female age 30 to 40, one male engaged in agriculture and two in manufacturing and trade. I find Jarrott (Jarrett) Patterson in Henry co. VA in 1850 and Jared in 1860 born abt 1808 and Jared in 1870. This family was in VA in 1840 to 1843. Son Wiley indicates VA as his birth state in three censuses. Daughters Rachel and Mary indicate VA as their birth state in the 1910 census. The death certificates for both of these children have Henry co. VA as their place of birth. All other children seem to list NC as birth state. They may have been in VA as early as 1835 when daughter Mary was born. (Henry co. is adjacent to Surry co. to the north.) Henry co. VA has no census for 1790, 1800 or 1810. The 1850 Surry Co. NC census North Division (Hollow Spring) page 292 has Julius Patterson age 54 (carpenter), Rachel is 49, John R is 32 (Hempmaker), James M (tobaconist) is 31, Julius is 22 (farmer), Margarett is 20, Martesia is 18, Mary A is 15, An?nders is 13 (male), Rachael E is 11, Wiley E is 7. All were born in NC. Also in this household is John Dodson age 18 a tobacconist from VA. Living near this family is the Harrison family (James M married Eliza Harrison by 1853). On the same page is Julius's brother Wiley and family. 1857 & 1859, A Julius Patterson was appointed Constable in the Mount Airy district. The 1860 Surry Co., NC census, Mount Airy PO, has Julius Patterson age 64, occupation is Tobacconist, value of real estate owned is $2000 and value of personal property is $100. He was born in NC. The 1870 Surry Co NC census, Mount Airy PO, has J A Patterson age 72 living with son John R Patterson and family. Julius may have died Oct. 1, 1877. [source?] Julius's birth date and death date from the DAR application of Jane Patterson Dierberger 1993. Julius's father James Patterson states in his pension application papers "that he was living in Henry County in the capacity of an apprentice learning the carpenter trade with Thomas Cooper then went to Orange County Ncarolina where his parents lived. He married & lived in said county many years & then moved to Stokes County in which county he now lives." Guilford was created in 1770 from parts of Rowan and Orange co. NC. Julius's middle name may be Ambrose. Julius may be buried in the Salem United Methodist Church, Ward Gap Hwy, North Mount Airy NC as is his son John R. Patterson. If so, Julius has no marker.
