The 21-year-old Julia was introduced to President Tyler at a White House Reception in 1842. They began seeing each other in January 1843, a few months after the death of First Lady Letitia Tyler. Her father died in an explosion during a Presidential excursion where both Julia and the President were present. He comforted her in her grief, and they married with a minimum of celebration, and no notification to his family or the public, in June 1844.
