In Alfred, N. Y., Dec. 3d, 1879, of heart disease, at the residence of her son-in-law, Dr. Sheppard, Julia Babcock, wife of Aaron Coon, aged 68 years, 9 months, and 24 days. She was born in Petersburgh, from whence, nearly twenty-three years ago, she removed to Alfred Centre with her husband and children, for the sake of the educational advantages afforded the latter by this change.
Her character was especially marked by sincerity in her intercourse with others, by fidelity in every relation in life, and by loving kindness toward all, particularly the homeless and needy. Of a deeply religious nature, she was early impressed with a conviction of her duty to God, and, while a child, gave her heart to him. When about 18 years of age, during a revival of religion in the Seventh-day Baptist Church, under the preaching of Eld. John Green, she was one of seven brothers and sisters who embraced the Sabbath, and made a public profession of faith in Christ.
On moving to Alfred, she promptly changed her church membership to the 1st Alfred Church. Her Christian walk, though marked by much self-distrust was earnest and consistent. Being an invalid during many years of her life, she learned from that condition the signal graces of patience and self-denial.
Her last sickness, though brief, was one of extreme suffering, which she endured without a murmur or complaint, and, although for the most part unconscious, she left many tokens of her readiness for the great change. Her family and friends mourn an irreparable loss.
