Article by Michael Petrou, 11 Sep 2013.

"Jules Paivio, the last surviving Canadian to have fought in the Spanish Civil War, died last week. He was 96."

  3. Jules Paivio, in Vapaa Sana: North America's Finnish Weekly
    about 2005.

"Man of conviction -Jules Paivio is an unwavering left-winger, academic and Spanish civil war veteran."
Jules Paivio has throughout his life been a believer in human ability to change the world for the better. He is also the kind of man that follows his convictions as opposed to just talking about them. As a young man Paivio left home to fight in the Spanish civil war. It was a war that attracted a large number of volunteers from other countries to defend Spain against fascism. He has also been actively involved with leftwing causes and he is a long time peace activist.

  4. Jules Paivio, in Renegades: Canadians in the Spanish Civil War
    Page 138, 2008.

"Between 1936 and 1939, almost 1,700 Canadians defied their government and volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War. They left behind punishing lives in Canadian relief camps, mines, and urban flophouses to confront fascism in a country few knew much about. Michael Petrou has drawn on recently declassified archival material, interviewed surviving Canadian veterans, and visited the battlefields of Spain to write the definitive account of Canadians in the Spanish Civil War. Renegades is an intimate and unflinching story of idealism and courage, duplicity and defeat." 5. Jules Paivio, in The Toronto Globe and Mail: "The Mac-Paps get the last word"
Radio audio article by Kate Taylor, 9 Nov 2012.

At the click of a mouse, a frail and cracked old voice fills the office of a CBC radio producer. “I have been a very lucky guy … I was lined up to be shot,” says 95-year-old veteran Jules Paivio as he recalls his last-minute escape from a fascist firing squad during the Spanish Civil War.
CBC producer Steve Wadhams is also lucky: To create The Spanish Crucible, a two-hour radio documentary filled with the voices of veterans of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, he didn’t have to rely solely on his recent interview with Paivio, the last living Canadian volunteer to have fought in Spain in 1936 to 1938. Instead, he could draw on 150 hours of interviews with dozens of hearty middle-aged men that were recorded in the 1960s, but never aired."
