1980 - Newspaper Clipping: Diver Charged. Porter Woman Dies In Sunday Accident. Ransomville - A 24-year-old Town of Porter woman was killed when the 1964 Chevrolet Corvette she was riding in went off Lake Road, here, about 11:05pm Sunday. Judith Canfield, 24, of 2222 Lake Road, was thrown from the car in the mishap, according to Sherrif's Deputies Carl Berak, Robert Lozina and Acting Sgt Peter M. Clark. Frank D. Wegener, 31, of 3181 Maple Road, Wilson, driver of the car, was charged by deputies with driving while intoxicated and failure to keep right, and faces an Oct 7 court appearance. He was treated for minor back injuries and released from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Deputies said the man was east-bound on Lake Road when, he alleged, the woman grabbed the steering wheel and turned it, causing him to lose control. They said the car slid sideways for 66 feet and went off the road another 42 feet, ejecting the woman and coming to rest in a ditch. The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at Mount St Mary's Hospital, Lewiston. A native of Niagara Falls and graduate from Lewiston-Porter High School, Miss Canfield had worked at the family restaurant, The Shanty, Lake Road, here. She was a lifelong area resident and was a member of St John Lutheran Church, Youngstown; the Sha... Baseball Team and the Women's International Bowling Conference. Surviving are her father, James, here, and mother, Loretta, of Lanta.., Fla.; three sisters, Mrs Stephen (Brenda) Swidergale, Grand Island, Mrs Steven (Susan) Hillman, here, and Mrs Daniel (Joan) Vielette, West Palm Beach, Fla; her grandmother, Mrs Grace Buttery, here; a nephew, four nieces and several aunts and uncles.
