  4. Judd F. Copeland, 59, owner and operator of Copeland Oil Company, Baldwin, died unexpectedly March 18 while ice fishing on Tank Lake in Idlewild.
    Judd F. Copeland was born May 5, 1935, in Grand Rapids, the son of Judd and Gladys (Williams) Copeland. He came to Baldwin as a child with his parents and was a 1953 graduate of Baldwin High School. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Toledo. He was married June 30, 1956, in Evergreen Chapel in Carr Settlement to Donna Corey and she survives.
    The couple first purchased the Baldwin Dairy Queen which they operated for a time. They then purchased the Baldwin Crek Motel and operated it for seven years. In 1969 they became agents for Thill Oil Company of Muskegon for seven years, purchasing the business in 1976. They have owned and operated it as Copeland Oil Company since.
    He was a member of Baldwin Congregational Church, life member of Peacock Post No. 5315 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Michigan Petroleum and National Petroleum Associations, the Bitely Better Conservation Club, the Elks Lodge No. 974 in Big Rapids, and the Masonic Lodge in Baldwin.
    Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, William Copeland of Baldwin, and Jeffrey (and Maureen) Copeland of Diamond Bar, Calif.; his mother, Gladys Copeland; his sister, Mary (and James) Hannon of Gaylord; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Judd W. Copeland, and a son in infancy, Judd F. Copeland, Jr.
    Services for Mr. Copeland will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Baldwin Congregational Church with the Rev. Bernard Fetty officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Plains Township Cemetery, where Peacock Post No. 5315 VFW will hold services.
    The family will receive friends at the Vida Funeral Home in Baldwin from 2 to 4 this afternoon adn 7 to 9 this evening.
    Memorials may be directed to the Shrine of the Pines or Peacock Post No. 5315 VFW with envelopes available at the funeral home.
