Juana Marquez was listed as a full-blooded Tigua Indian. She married Ben S. Dowell about 1852-53 in Concordia, Texas, Judge Rufus Doane officiating. At the time of their marriage, Ben was about 34 years old and Juana was about 19. This account of their ages appears to be incorrect, or greatly in question, since several census records show Ben to be 20 years older than Juana.

She was said to be small, like Ben Dowell's mother, was from a respected Tigua family that included religious leaders. Juana did not speak English, but understood it. It is said that she had no formal schooling and could not read or write.

Juana died in early 1891 and was first buried at Ysleta, then reburied at Concordia Cemetery. Family members have been unable to locate the graves of Ben and Juana, but their son John has a large marker inscribed with their surname at Concordia Cemetery.
