According to an oral interview with his daughter Rachel, Josef came to America probably twice before marrying Maria. Probably once in
1898. The 1910 census says he was living with his sister and her family since
1908, in Norway, Michigan and he was single (wrong).
He came to America again in 1912 and the war broke out in Europe so
his wife and children were not able to join him until 1920.
Josef and his wife returned to Belgium in 1930. When they got married
Josef could not sign his name. The marriage record does not say why.
