Facts and Events
There is no record of Josiah's parents but we know he was born in 1771 from his death records. There appear to be three possibilities. 1. Josiah Nicholas (1734-1806) and Sarah Rook (1733-1788) married in 1771. These parents are suggested by the common unusual name Josiah but when Josiah dies in 1806 the record does not state "The Elder". These parents used a marriage licence suggesting Sarah was pregnant in 1771. They have one recorded child John, baptised in 1772 which could be a mis-transcribed record for Josiah (often abbreviated Joh.). However they also have a record of a child dying in 1772. 2. Joseph Nicholas (1725-1806) and Mary Oakford (1729-1795) married in 1754. The witness at Josiah's wedding, often a parent, was Joseph Nicholas. Their last recorded child was born in 1769 so there could have been one more unbaptised child two years later. Josiah's eldest son is also called Joseph. 3. John Nicholas (1726-1783) and Martha Chalke (1735-1796) married in 1771. These parents used a marriage licence suggesting Martha was pregnant in 1771. |
