Josiah2 Gilbert (Thomas1), born about 1618 in England; died Aug. 22, 1688, in Wethersfield, Conn.; married first, about 1650 or 1651, Elizabeth Belcher, born about 1632; died Oct. 17, 1682, in Wethersfield, Conn., aged fifty years, daughter of Gregory and Catherine Belcher of Braintree, Mass.; married second, in January, 1687/8, Mary (Harris) Ward, born Mar. 1, 1645/6; died before Aug. 30,1721, probably in Middletown, Conn.; daughter of William and Edith (-----) Harris of Rowley, Mass., and Middletown, Conn., and widow of John Ward of Middletown. Josiah Gilbert appears to have remained in Braintree until after his marriage. It is doubtful whether he ever lived at Windsor, Conn., with his father. He probably came to Connecticut in the latter part of 1650 or early in 1651. … Lieut. John Hollister had a farm here with buildings before 1651, which in that year he leased to the Gilberts, Jonathan, John and Josiah, the latter, Josiah, living upon it."
